2402 San Gabriel St
Austin, TX 78705
Freedman’s Cocktail Bar, Lounge, Beer Garden, and smokehouse offers retro inspired drinks with barbecue in of Austin’s most historic buildings. Freemen’s is located right in the heart of West Campus by many residential apartments and condos on San Gabriel and 24th. It is a very special place, not only because of welcoming vibe inside and out but because this building is called the Frazetti building and was built in 1869. Built by a freed slave named George Franklin, it quickly became Austin’s first “Freed Community”. One of the most notable residents was Reverend Jacob Fontaine who had lived in the building from 1875 to 1898 and opened a number of community oriented businesses each day, including churches. As you can see, the current name is completely necessary and appropriate.
Freedman’s serves an array of drinks such as aged liquors and know for their whiskey along with interesting cocktails with specialty mixology. The beer and wine selection is extensive and Freedman’s is a perfect venue for gatherings and events and you can reserve the restaurant for private parties. Their famous barbecue makes for a great compliment with the drinks which can be ordered by the half pound, sammie or plates with all the necessary accouterments and sides to go with the food.
Each month Freedman’s offers a Whiskey of the Month with their 4pm Happy Hours every weekend along with Whiskey dinners which you can purchase tickets to attend each Wednesday night. You cannot go wrong with this speak-easy style bar with deliciousness in every single menu item with a complex cocktail or whiskey to pair it with. The barbecue is classic Hill Country style by a trained chef who likes to change the menu seasonally and all items are cooked in the smoker.
So pull up your cowboy boots, loosen up those belts and get over to Freedman’s to try the cocktails and barbecue that will leave your pallet happy and satisfied, possibly begging for more not matter how full your tummy may feel.
